Moons of Darsalon

Indie developer Dr. Kucho! Games is set to launch their latest title, Moons of Darsalon, across all major platforms on 6 February. This peculiar blend of run-and-gun action and rescue mechanics looks to put an interesting spin on the classic Lemmings formula, whilst incorporating modern physics systems.

Retro Meets Modern

Set against the backdrop of various moons orbiting the planet Darsalon, players are tasked with rescuing stranded mining crews known as darsanauts. What sets this title apart from traditional platformers is its focus on NPC management through voice commands, coupled with physics-based gameplay mechanics.

The game’s visual presentation appears to merge contemporary lighting techniques with deliberately restricted colour palettes and real-time pixelation of 3D models. True to its retro inspiration, it even sports an optional CRT filter for those seeking that authentic vintage feel.

Physics and Functionality

The developer seems particularly proud of the game’s physics engine, which promises to deliver realistic liquid dynamics and terrain manipulation. Players will have access to a ground maker gun, allowing them to both destroy and create new pathways through the environment. This mechanic could prove particularly useful when shepherding the AI-driven darsanauts to safety.

Tools of the Trade

Beyond the standard running and gunning, the game equips players with various tools including a jetpack for enhanced mobility. Vehicle sections featuring space trucks and dropships add variety to the rescue operations, with the developer claiming to have implemented realistic off-road physics systems.

Musical Throwback

The soundtrack takes inspiration from the iconic MOS 6581 (SID) chip from 1982, complemented by speech synthesis—a fitting audio approach that appears to match the game’s visual aesthetic.

For Dr. Kucho, this project represents the culmination of an eight-year development journey and a return to his teenage dreams of game development. Following his previous titles, Ghosts’n DJs and Pilots of Darsalon, this latest entry looks to be his most ambitious project to date.

Moons of Darsalon launches on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4|5, Xbox One, Series S|X, and PC on 6 February.
