The creators of It Takes Two return with an ambitious dimension-hopping tale
When Josef Fares and Hazelight Studios announce a new co-op adventure, the gaming industry tends to sit up and take notice. Their latest venture, Split Fiction, looks set to continue their tradition of pushing cooperative gameplay into fascinating new territories, this time by literally splitting players between sci-fi and fantasy realms.
A Tale of Two Writers
Split Fiction follows Mio and Zoe, two authors from opposing genres who find themselves trapped within their own creative works after an encounter with a mysterious machine designed to steal their ideas. It’s precisely the sort of delightfully meta premise we’ve come to expect from Hazelight, though this time with a decidedly more sinister edge.
Genre-Bending Gameplay
What’s particularly intriguing about Split Fiction is how it leverages its dual-world premise to create varied gameplay scenarios. The preview footage shows everything from gravity bike chases to dance battles with monkeys, suggesting Hazelight hasn’t lost its touch for the wonderfully absurd. The contrast between sci-fi and fantasy environments appears to be more than just aesthetic, with each realm offering distinct mechanics and abilities.
Accessibility and Price Point
Following the studio’s player-friendly approach, Split Fiction will launch with the return of Friend’s Pass, allowing owners to invite a friend to play the full game without purchase. The addition of cross-play support across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms is a welcome enhancement to this feature. At £49.99, it’s positioned slightly below the typical AAA price point, which seems appropriate for what promises to be a focused, co-op-specific experience.
Split Fiction launches on 6th March 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and EA app.
