Atari and Choice Provisions bring a sideways twist to brick-breaking gameplay, arriving on Xbox Series X|S on 25th March
Brick-breaking gameplay is getting a fresh perspective next month as Atari’s reimagining of its arcade classic prepares to smash onto Xbox consoles.
Atari has officially confirmed that Breakout Beyond, developed by Choice Provisions (the team behind the BIT.TRIP series), will launch on 25th March 2025 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, PC, and the Atari VCS.
A new release date trailer showcases this contemporary take on the 1976 original, which quite literally flips the script on the traditional Breakout formula by shifting the action to a sideways perspective.
Breaking Tradition
The most striking change in Breakout Beyond is immediately apparent – rather than the traditional bottom-to-top approach of classic Breakout, players will now progress horizontally through 72 levels of brick-smashing challenges. This sideways perspective fundamentally changes how players approach each level whilst maintaining the core brick-breaking mechanics that made the original an arcade staple.
Neon-drenched visuals dominate the aesthetic, with procedural effects that intensify as players build combos, rewarding skilled play with increasingly dazzling light shows. Special blocks grant power-ups including explosive brick-clearing blasts, protective barriers, and a laser cannon to carve through challenging sections.
Cooperative Gameplay and Modern Features
Breakout Beyond introduces two-player local co-op, allowing friends to team up for what the trailer suggests will be chaotic brick-smashing sessions. For those preferring precision over high scores, a new focus mode slows down time to help players navigate particularly challenging sections.
Completionists will find additional replay value in an unlockable endless mode that features global online leaderboards, adding a competitive element to the experience.
A Storied Developer at the Helm
Choice Provisions brings considerable rhythm-action experience to this reimagining, having established their reputation with the critically acclaimed BIT.TRIP series. Their involvement suggests Breakout Beyond may incorporate elements of their signature audio-visual synesthesia, especially considering the procedural audio and visual effects that react to player performance.
With the 25th March release just around the corner, Xbox players who appreciate arcade classics with a modern twist won’t have long to wait before they can experience this reimagined take on one of gaming’s foundational titles.
