Firenut Games’ latest offering promises to push the boundaries of terror with its mind-bending horror experience
There’s something profoundly unsettling about a doll locked behind glass with a warning etched into its prison. This simple yet effective hook sits at the heart of Baptiste, the forthcoming psychological horror title from Digital Dream that aims to disturb players on a fundamental level.
A House of Nightmares
Baptiste places players in the shoes of Tom, a young man who moves with his mother Sara to an isolated mansion perched on the jagged cliffs of a remote UK coastline. Seeking solace and a fresh start after an unspecified tragedy, they instead find a house that seems to have its own malevolent consciousness. At the centre of it all is the titular Baptiste – a grotesque doll locked in a cabinet with a warning that should never be ignored.
Psychological Torment
What sets Baptiste apart from other entries in the horror genre appears to be its focus on psychological deterioration. The gameplay trailer suggests a deliberate blurring of reality and nightmare, with Tom’s grip on sanity gradually loosening as players progress. The mansion itself is positioned as almost a character in its own right, with the environment shifting and warping to reflect Tom’s mental state.
A Sensory Assault
Digital Dream seems particularly focused on creating an immersive audio-visual experience. The trailer highlights meticulous sound design that complements the game’s oppressive atmosphere, while the visuals display what the developers describe as “macabre elegance” – a blend of the grotesque and the beautiful that draws players deeper into the nightmare.
Hands-on Experience Available Now
For those brave enough to sample Baptiste’s horrors, a demo featuring the first 30 minutes of gameplay is now available on Steam. This opening segment introduces players to the mansion and the ominous doll that serves as the game’s focal point, allowing them to decide whether to heed the warning or let curiosity lead them down a darker path.
Baptiste is scheduled to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X later this year, with wishlist options available now on PC and PlayStation platforms.
