The 90s platformer Croc: Legend of the Gobbos has made its return, with Argonaut Games launching a remastered version across all modern platforms. Originally released in 1997 for PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Panasonic 3DO and PC, this charming adventure featuring the little green crocodile has been revitalised for contemporary audiences.
Argonaut Returns After Two Decades
The remaster also marks the revival of the Argonaut Games brand after a 20-year hiatus. Jez San OBE, who founded the original Argonaut in 1982, shared his excitement about the studio’s comeback: “Bringing the Argonaut name back after twenty years away has been an amazing experience. Argonaut was always about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in gaming.”
Enhanced for Today’s Players
This modernized version of Croc features significant upgrades while preserving the heart of the original game. Players can expect vibrant high-definition graphics, refined gameplay mechanics, and an overhauled control system that caters to both newcomers and veterans. The remaster offers two control options: the classic “tank” controls for purists and a modern analog implementation with an improved camera system.
The game follows Croc on his quest to rescue the adorable Gobbos from the clutches of Baron Dante, the game’s antagonist who, according to a spokesperson, still harbours ambitions of conquering Gobbo Valley: “This time, with the power of modern gaming, I will finally conquer Gobbo Valley and claim my rightful throne.”
The Crocipedia: A Digital Museum
A standout feature of the remaster is the inclusion of the Crocipedia, a comprehensive digital museum filled with historical assets from the game’s development. This collection includes design documents, concept art, animation tests, pre-release music tracks, and exclusive interviews with developers from both the original and remastered versions.
Multi-Platform Availability
The game is now available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. PC gamers can exclusively find it on GOG, where it comes bundled with Croc Classic – the original PC version updated for compatibility with Windows 10/11 – as a bonus for game preservation enthusiasts.
Whether you’re revisiting a childhood favourite or discovering Croc’s adventures for the first time, this remaster promises to deliver the same heartwarming and thrilling family-friendly platforming that captivated players nearly three decades ago.
